Glossary

Amituofo - (also 'Emituofo') ‘I respect the light within’/'Honour to Sakyamuni Buddha'. A verbal affirmation of compassion and respect. This is most commonly used in conjunction with the bow. It is also used as a greeting for personal and business transactions.

Ba Gua Lo - ‘Eight Methods Building’. The Da Xiang Guo Si Shaolin Ju Shi Lin Temple. It is a centre of learning, where many of the ceremonies and major events of the Tradition are held. The Ba Gua Lo is located at Nine Palace Farm.

Bai He Ch'an Quan - ‘White Crane Buddhist Fist’. See Martial page.

BaiShi - Ceremony where a devotee takes formal vows to become a Buddhist disciple (Wu Jie; observance of the five silas).

Bodhidharma - The 28th Patriarch of Cha’n Buddhism in India. Travelling from India through China, Bodhidharma settled at the Songshan Shaolin Temple where he instructed the local monks (from around 527AD). Widely acknowledged as the first Patriarch of Cha’n Buddhism in China.

Buddha:      
- Siddharta Gautama (Sakyamuni Buddha): Indian prince, member of the Ksatriya (warrior caste), left his worldly life in pursuit of spiritual understanding. Achieved enlightenment whilst sitting beneath a bodhi tree. Recognised as the first Buddha of the aeon; and is
- One component of the Triple Gem of Buddhism.

Buddha Nature - also known as ‘Original face’, ‘Universal consciousness’.

Ch'an:
- also known as Zen (Japan), Son (Korea). Ch'an is the cultivation of wisdom and the understanding of Self and ones place in the world through direct experience, self realisation; and
- Ch'an Buddhism.

Da Mo - Chinese name for Bodhidharma. See Bodhidharma. Short for 'Pu Ti Da Mo'.

Da Shi - (pronounced ‘Dar-Sher’); The most senior spiritual master of the Tradition in the area.

Da Shi Xiong - (pronounced ‘Dar-Sher-Shong’); The most recently appointed disciple of a master who acts on as protector of the martial system or spiritual platform (as designated) in the event of that master’s inability to act.

Da Xiang Guo Si - The Immense Presence State Temple, located in Kai Feng, China. A true Ch'an Buddhist Temple, the Da Xiang Guo Si actively promotes Ch'an Buddhism in the community, and is the patron of the Australian Branch, the Da Xiang Guo Si Shaolin Ju Shi Lin.

Da Xiang Guo Si Shaolin Ju Shi Lin - Immense Presence State Temple and Shaolin Temple, Circles of Lay Buddhist Scholars. This is the Australian Branch of the Ch'an Temple, Da Xiang Guo Si, located in Kai Feng, China.

De - (pronounced ‘Der’); In this context, it is a prefix that denotes Shaolin disciples of the 31st generation.

Devotee - a practitioner who has openly begun their study in Ch'an Buddhist theory and doctrine, but has not as yet taken formal vows to become a Buddhist disciple.

Dharma:
- the teaching, fundamental truth; and is
- One component of the Triple Gem of Buddhism.

Disciple - one who has taken formal vows to become a Ch'an Buddhist disciple. This individual makes the full commitment to understand Self using Ch'an Buddhism as their designated spiritual platform.

Ju Shi Lin - Lay Buddhist Circles; forest of lay Buddhist scholars.

Kung Fu - ('Gong Fu') Overarching term encompassing Chinese martial arts. Classic kung fu is used for self-defence and physical development, as well as a tool for spiritual growth and understanding. See Martial Page.

Mezong Qi Fa - ‘Dark Labyrinth pugilistic principles'. See Martial page.

Nine Palace Farm - Home of the Da Xiang Guo Si Shaolin Ju Shi Lin. Located in the NSW Southern Highlands, Nine Palace Farm acts as a focal point and meeting place for all members of the Tradition in Australia. Public discourses, training sessions, seminars and open days are all regular events, held in the Ba Gua Lo.

Practitioner - a student of the martial and/or meditative pathways, but not yet with a full commitment to the Ch'an platform.

Quan - boxing, fist.

Qi Gong:
- lit. '‘breathing techniques'; or
- art of developing and cultivating internal energy.

Sangha:
- the community. This term often refers to the monastic Buddhist community; and is
- One component of the Triple Gem of Buddhism

Seva - ‘selfless service’. The art of helping or providing assistance without the thought of receiving something in return.

Shaolin Temple - There were five Shaolin monasteries in Chinese history. The most famous of these was located at SongShan in Henan Province; where the Indian saint Bodhidharma expounded Ch'an Buddhism to the monastic population.

Shi Fu - (pronounced ‘Sher-foo’) an individual with control of a branch of the Association. The Shi Fu is responsible for the curriculum standards as well as general guidance in spiritual fundamentals. They are the highest ranking practitioners and are answerable only to the Tradition’s Board of Directors.

Shi Xiong - (pronounced ‘Sher-Shong’); Any Buddhist disciple who has taken vows ahead of their ‘younger’ brothers/sisters (referred to as ‘Shi Di’). There is no discrimination between male and female. ‘Shi Xiong’ is a title used by both gender.

Songshan Shaolin Ch'an Quan - ‘Songshan Shaolin Temple Buddhist boxing’. See Martial page.

Ts'ao Tung Zong - One of the ‘Five Houses’ of Cha’n Buddhism. Named after it’s founder, Tung Shan - Liang Chieh, and his disciple, Ts'ao Shan - Pen Chi. The Da Xiang Guo Si Shaolin Ju Shi Lin represents the Ts'ao Tung Ch'an Buddhist family in Australia.

Xing - (pronounced ‘Shing’); In this context, it is a prefix that denotes Shaolin disciples of the 32nd generation.

Yong - (pronounced ‘Yoong’); In this context, it is a prefix that denotes Shaolin disciples of the 33rd generation.
